It Happened Again

June 16, 2010

The first time it happened, I was with my sister.  I think I was still in middle school.  It may have been summer…I’m really not sure about all the details except that we were at the track of our Ewing High School.  What I do remember is how we felt.  We were and are athletic.  We are engaged in life and aware of what happens around us.  We go for what we want…and that night, we wanted to feel liberated…and strong.

So what did we do?  We ran in our sports bras.

This may not be a huge deal to some more bodily-blessed people, but my sister and I are not “naturally thin.”  We have to work out to look good and toned and we knooow that if we eat that ice cream tonight, we’re going to see it on our hips tomorrow. We weren’t even necessarily thin at the time of the above-mentioned event…but it didn’t matter.  We wanted to feel freeeeee.  We wanted to punch any obstacles in the face and say “BACK OFF!”  We didn’t care who would see us…we were just excited about life.

So last night…it happened again.  That same feeling of liberation…

My girlfriends Natalie and Maryn came over to see me before I leave for Texas in just a couple days.  We went up to the pool of my apartments, sat on the edge of the pool and dangled our feet in the warm pool water.  Discussions revolved around all the big changes and exciting life adventures that each one of us is going through.  New homes, new cities, new love, new puppy, and one amaaazing service trip to Africa.  Our voices and laughter danced into the night sky.  The water felt so warm against the cool breeze of the night.  I think we all knew it was going to happen, but it wasn’t until an hour later that we decided to do it.  We (very easily) decided to strip down and jump in the pool…

Again, I realize this may not be a big deal to some people, but it was to me.  It was a thrill…I was with some of my most favorite people…when we’re all going through big changes and although all the changes are very exciting, they can still be stressful and sometimes you just have to let go.  Besides that, I love to feel thrilled.  So here’s to feeling thrilled and liberated!  Chase what you want and go after it, hard.
